Continuing to grow — long after the program ends

Mom W’s experience reminds us that change happens slowly, and many of the fruits of the FamilyForward program are not reaped until years after the family has graduated.

Mom W finished her two years with FamilyForward 18 months ago. Since graduating from the program, she and her volunteer mentors have continued to meet every few months to catch up over coffee. Last week, her mentors received this text from Mom W:

“I HAD to share this with the two of you: as of today, my car is officially paid off! Once I re-negotiated the rate, I had more money to put towards my principle. It shaved a whole year off the loan. I feel like I’m making good on my promise to not waste the opportunity that FamilyForward gave me. I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you!”

Mom W’s experience reminds us that change happens slowly, and many of the fruits of the FamilyForward program are not reaped until years after the family has graduated. And her text highlights the fact that that FamilyForward is about more than just dollars and cents — it’s about relationships. Although Mom W has not received rent assistance from our program for a year-and-a-half, she still values the kindness and support she received from her mentors.
